Thematic writing assignment
Their is one theme that I can see throughout the entire story of the Odyssey. This theme is that perserverance is extremely important if you want to reach your goals. odysseus faces countless enemies and obsticules in his quest to return home to his kingdom of Ithaka. Some of these obsticules include sailing to the land of the dead, and resisting the urge to run to his wife when he returns to his kingdom.
Odysseus doesnt have all the answers he needs to know to get home so he is told that he must visit a man who is dead in chapter 11. Their is only one way to do that and that is to sail to the land of the dead. A normal man would never have the courage to sail to such a place but for Odysseus reaching his final goal must be done at any cost. Lines 53-54 on page 251 show that the place Odysseus is going is dark and scary. Odysseus could have easily gave up at the thought of traveling to what is bassically hell but he didnt because he shows perserverance.
In chapter 13 Odysseus finally reaches Ithaka. He could have easily ran right up to the palace to see his wife and gotten killed by the suitors. This must have taken incredible toughness since he hasn't seen his wife in over 20 years. Lines 41-44 on page 287 Show his exitement to be home at last on Ithaka but he still resists the urge to return to the palace. He knew that his problems were not over yet and that he had a few more enemies to deal with before he reached his final goal.
In chapter 19 Odysseus is disguised as a beggar by the goddess Athena so he can return to his palace and devise a plan to take back his thrown. Well Odysseus is at his palace he meets his wife for the first time in 20 years. Lines 625-630 on page 408 show Penelope speaking to Odysseus for the first time. With Odysseus' perservarance he kept himself from revealing who he actually was. These are just some of the many reasons why Odysseus has shown incredible perserverance throughout his journey the Odyssey.
